Common Website Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Let’s play a game. I’m going to describe a website, and you tell me if it sounds familiar.

You click a link. The page takes forever to load. When it finally appears, text is crammed into tiny boxes, images are pixelated, and the navigation menu has about forty options that lead absolutely nowhere. You can’t find a phone number. You can’t figure out what they actually do. So you leave.

Sound familiar? Of course it does. We’ve all been there.

The sad truth is that many small business websites are unintentionally driving customers away. And the business owner has no idea because nobody’s calling to say, “Hey, your website is terrible.” They just quietly leave and find someone else.

Here are five common website mistakes—and how to fix them.

Mistake #1: A Cluttered, Confusing Homepage

Your homepage is your digital storefront. If it’s cluttered with too much text, too many images, and too many options, visitors won’t know where to look or what to do.

The Fix: Keep it simple. One clear headline. One clear call-to-action. Make it obvious what you do and what you want visitors to do next—whether that’s calling you, booking an appointment, or filling out a form.

Mistake #2: No Clear Call-to-Action

Speaking of calls-to-action, let’s talk about the websites that leave visitors hanging. You browse around, you like what you see, and then… nothing. No “Contact Us” button. No “Get a Quote” link. Just a dead end.

The Fix: Every page should have a purpose. And every page should guide the visitor toward that purpose. Make your buttons obvious, action-oriented, and easy to find. “Contact Us,” “Book Now,” “Get Started”—you get the idea.

Mistake #3: Buried Contact Information

This one drives me crazy. You’re on a website. You want to reach out. You scroll to the top. Nothing. Scroll to the bottom. Still nothing. You click “About Us.” Nope. You click “Services.” No luck. Finally, you give up and go to a competitor.

The Fix: Put your contact information everywhere. In the header. In the footer. On a dedicated “Contact” page. Make it impossible for someone to visit your site and not know how to reach you.

Mistake #4: Ignoring Mobile Users

More than half of your visitors are probably on a phone. If your site doesn’t work well on mobile—tiny text, buttons that don’t click, sideways scrolling—they’re gone.

The Fix: Invest in a responsive design. It’s not optional anymore. If your site looks great on a desktop but falls apart on a phone, you’re losing business.

Mistake #5: Forgetting About Speed

Three seconds. That’s about how long visitors will wait for your site to load. After that, they’re out.

The Fix: Optimize your images, cut unnecessary plugins, and choose a reliable hosting provider. Speed matters more than you think.

The Bottom Line

Your website is your most powerful marketing tool. Don’t let simple mistakes turn it into your biggest weakness. Take a critical look at your site today—and fix the things that are quietly chasing customers away.

Your visitors (and your bottom line) will thank you.
